L'fire which this morning hit several nightclubs in the Las Atalayas neighbourhood of Murcia is the deadliest recorded in Spain at the time of the 1990 tragedy at the Flying nightclub in Zaragoza, where 43 people died. The worst tragedy to ever occur at a Spanish nightclub took place in Madrid on December 17, 1983, when fires devastated the premises of Alcalá 20, killing 81 people, most of them very young.
The disaster sparked a political storm, as investigations showed that the catastrophe was further aggravated by a faulty lighting system and a locked fire door. After the fire, Spain passed numerous regulations to increase safety in the venues.
