Labor inspectors ready to strike: stop on October 30th

FP CGIL Campania, together with other trade unions, strongly supports the protest of the workers of the Labour Inspectorate.

The employees have been in a state of agitation for about two years and on October 30 they will strike for the third time to claim their dignity as workers, with pickets in front of the Prefectures of the Region. The labor inspectors, so often mentioned by politicians for their fundamental role in supervising health and safety in the workplace, do not receive adequate economic and professional recognition for the functions performed and for the related responsibilities.

The salaries received are among the lowest in the PA, even lower than those of former colleagues at the Ministry, so much so that many competition winners prefer to give up employment at the INL to go and work in other Administrations. Furthermore, the employees of the Authority are now fed up with making up for the shortcomings of an Administration that supports its activity on the resources and personal assets of workers, who are even asked to advance travel, petrol and parking expenses as well as to make their own means available: cars, internet, paper, printers, telephones.

Despite this, the government and top management of the Inspectorate are responding to this already exasperating situation by increasing the skills and workloads of the staff and are proceeding with a reorganization that includes, in Campania, as in other regions of Italy, the merging of the Inspectorates' offices, thus reducing the legality controls on the territory, as is happening in the provinces of Avellino and Benevento.

The Minister of Labor Calderone, who oversees the activities of the Inspectorate, after a long silence has called the unions, probably to try to avoid yet another strike that certainly damages the image, but with respect to the various problems of the Authority and the workers' demands she has only made mere and vague promises.

FP CGIL Campania calls for coherence: the fight against irregular work and the strengthening of measures to combat accidents at work and accidental deaths at work cannot be achieved with mere posters and superficial proclamations but resources and investments are needed, a serious political plan is needed, a credible project that exploits all the forces in the field giving concrete consideration to the labor inspectors who are the first force to count on.
