During the preliminary investigations, he mistook one prison officer for another, perhaps confusing them in photos because they were both almost bald, and only in court, in front of the video, did he admit his mistake, recognizing the "correct" officer, who however has already been released from the trial as he was acquitted a few months ago.

Once again, the methods of identifying the defendants made during the preliminary investigations by the victims are animating the trial for the violence suffered on 6 April 2020 by the inmates of the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison at the hands of the prison officers.

Former prisoner Giuseppe Calanni, in front of the prosecutor of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, recognized Inspector Salvatore Mezzarano as the one who had taken him from his cell and taken him to the social room, where he had been slapped several times.

Today, however, in a courtroom, the lawyers of the defendant Mezzarano (Edoardo Razzino and Giuseppe Stellato) showed the videos of the route from which it emerges that it was not Mezzarano who picked up Calanni, and that the inspector was not in that section.

In the end, Calanni recognized the agent Angelo Di Costanzo, who does not appear in this trial having chosen the abbreviated procedure, which already concluded for him a few months ago with a full acquittal.

The trial is underway in the bunker courtroom of the same prison where the events occurred: 105 defendants - including agents, officials of the Department of Penitentiary Administration and ASL doctors - before the Assize Court of the Sammarinese tribunal presided over by Roberto Donatiello.

Wheelchair-bound inmate beaten, ‘not 100% disabled’

Another twist emerged in today's hearing regarding the prisoner's case Vincenzo Cacace, who died a few months ago and became known because he was filmed being beaten by officers during the beatings on 6 April 2020 in the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison.

Today it came out that he was not 110% disabled and to prove it, during the trial underway in the bunker courtroom of that same Caserta prison, some lawyers of the accused prison officers showed a video showing Cacace walking alone, without a wheelchair.

The lawyers wanted to clarify that the prisoner was not 100% disabled, as it seemed to emerge from the stories of the other prisoners, but he could walk and used a wheelchair for support, having in fact many health problems.
