In Naples, the 80th Anniversary of the Four Days of Naples was celebrated, an occasion on which the Gonfalone of the municipality of Naples was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit by the Carabinieri.
The Carabinieri chose this special occasion to award the highest recognition to the Gonfalone of the municipality of Naples, as a sign of gratitude and recognition for the contribution offered by the Neapolitan city, over the years, to the history of Italy and to the defense of the values of freedom and democracy.
The Four Days of Naples, which took place between September 27 and 30, 1943, represent one of the most significant moments in the modern history of Italy, a tangible demonstration of courage, determination and spirit of sacrifice. The Neapolitan population, united in the resistance against the Nazi occupation, demonstrated exceptional resilience, fighting for their freedom and for the future of Italy.
Military action allowed the Allied forces to enter Naples on 1 October 1943, thanks to the courage and heroism of its inhabitants, who were now exasperated and exhausted by the long years of war.
A few days before the Four Days, on September 12, dozens of soldiers were killed in the streets of the city, while about 4.

On the same day, five hundred people were taken to Teverola (CE) and forced to witness the execution of 14 carabinieri, "guilty" of having prevented German sappers from sabotaging the installations near the "Telephone Palace" and of having then resisted with weapons the reprisal attacks on their barracks in via Marchese Campodisola.
One of the most significant aspects of the Four Days was the spontaneous mobilization of the population. Men, women and even children joined the ranks of the resistance, demonstrating the deep bond between the Neapolitan people and their land.
To seal the important significance of today's commemoration, the Mayor of Naples, Dr. Gaetano Manfredi, also spoke, underlining how the values of this historic anniversary are still felt: "today, eighty years later, this freedom is a heritage that we share, of the city and of our country: this recognition is unanimous and for this reason my thanks go to the Carabinieri for the gold cross to our city".
In memory of that common front, the Minister of Defense, on the proposal of the General Command of the Carabinieri, has therefore awarded the “Golden Cross of Merit of the Carabinieri” which, in a solemn manner, was conferred during this ceremony.
The prestigious honor was awarded by the Commander General of the Carabinieri, General of the Army Corps Teo Luzi, who, in presiding over the ceremony together with the mayor of Naples and other military and civil authorities, recalled how "the most valid testimony of the work carried out by the Carabinieri for the liberation of this city remains the demonstration of affection perpetuated up to today by the Neapolitans".
The event, which took place in the splendid setting of Piazza del Plebiscito, not only honored the city of Naples, but highlighted the importance of historical memory and national unity, testifying to the sacrifice of many Italians.
