The Carabinieri responded to the scene and began an investigation into the incident. Bellizzi Mayor Mimmo Volpe said he was "deeply saddened and heartbroken. It's unthinkable," he added, "to die at 22 in a tragic car accident. There are no words for this tragedy. I share the pain and concerns of the families of these young men."
The mayor of Montecorvino Rovella, Martino D'Onofrio, also commented on the incident: "There are no words to express the pain of the terrible tragedy that occurred this morning in Bellizzi, in which Pierpaolo and Marika lost their lives. Losing a life in the prime of life, and in Marika's case, on her birthday, is unacceptable. My heart goes out to the families, and I and the entire community of Montecorvino Rovella extend their condolences."
