The situation in the nomad camps of Scampia It's like a time bomb ready to explode, an ecological bomb.
Tons of waste accumulate near the ecological island. This is material stolen from the bins by the camp's inhabitants, waste from cellar cleaners, old tires and even industrial waste.
All easily flammable material that could give rise to dangerous and toxic fires. Like the one that started on August 4, 2021, sending tons of waste up in smoke and for which it was necessary to close to traffic the stretch of the external ring road of Melito that runs alongside the camp.
The Green-Left alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli documented the situation again during an inspection to raise the alarm:
“The situation is collapsing. There are tons of waste accumulated and among them also dangerous materials such as asbestos and industrial waste.
We have requested an urgent cleanup and treatment of hazardous materials. We must intervene before another fire can occur, the danger of which is now very high.”- declares Borrelli- “Even if we clean up the area, the problem will reoccur, the issue must not be hidden. Intervening here only means moving the problem further away, it is a dog chasing its tail.
These camps, receptacles of degradation and illegality with many children abandoned to their fate or used for illegal activities, must be definitively liberated and dismantled and then real social reintegration projects must be created, first and foremost to save the children.”
