We are in Scampia, it's evening and the Carabinieri of the Naples mobile radio unit are combing the streets of the neighborhood.

The gazelle is travelling along Via Impastato when it notices 2 men in front of a garage at number 29. We are on a not too long street with garages and cellars that are located underneath a polar complex.

The road also divides two densely populated residential parks – Fiorito Park and Lotto K – a stone’s throw from the Vittorio Veneto Hotel Institute.

The soldiers enter and block the 2.

The place – as they used to say – was a veritable “Santa Barbara” of explosives.

Over one hundred kilos of dust seized, they could have demolished a building

A lot of material for the artisanal packaging of fireworks and a truly huge quantity of gunpowder stored in tin barrels and bags placed on the ground and on the shelves. A time bomb of considerable danger.

The Carabinieri bomb squad intervened on site but had to wait and act at dawn due to the environmental difficulties and the dangerousness of the explosive. Acting in the dark would have been too dangerous and the Carabinieri guarded the area all night. The garage – illegally used for the manufacture and storage of illegal pyrotechnic material – was seized.

The seizures included gunpowder, homemade explosive devices and raw materials for their packaging. 75 kilos of potassium perchlorate, a base for the creation of pirodal, a mixture of high-potential explosive powders. A barrel of gunpowder of another nature, 22 rolls of fuse, 6 boxes of “cobra 10” explosive devices.

Enough to blow up a building. Raffele Scuotto and Vincenzo Esposito, 60 and 58 years old locals already known to the police, ended up in handcuffs. The two were transferred to the Poggioreale prison, they must answer for illegal possession of explosives. Investigations are underway by the Carabinieri aimed at ascertaining the destination but above all the origin of so much explosive.
