Synopsis
The novel focuses on the sentimental portrait of Emanuele, the protagonist, who has lost his wife, thus becoming a widower, and who is also about to lose his son, hospitalized at the end of his life as a drug addict. The two emotional levels of husband and father are both about to be painfully emptied.
Emanuele, the first character who appears and the protagonist of the novel, is the father. Through him, a perfect representation of pain, expressed in a paternal way, of suffering and grief is provided.
In those moments of agony spent in the hospital where his son Giacomo is inexorably dying, Emanuele can do nothing but abandon himself to the memory. The first of all: the moment in which his son was conceived by him and his wife Luisa.
Shortly after, another memory surfaces in Emanuele's mind: the scene of his wife Luisa. She had fallen ill with depression: Emanuele had seen her different, destroyed, far from what she had been. Even in that case, he had wondered if he had some responsibility for her now irrecoverable condition, which had forced her to be hospitalized.
The sentimental description of the world of the inmates and their dramatic hospitalization is significant.
Through his story, a relationship opens with the other guests of the nursing home that do not leave him indifferent and with whom he sets up a generous exchange of humanity with a curious gaze and humanly capable of closeness.
And just as Emanuele had witnessed his wife's death as a helpless husband, he now found himself witnessing his son's death with the same helplessness as a father.
Overcome by sleep, he will wake up when his son has just passed away. Emanuele will raise a prayer to the sky: "That beyond the darkness there is always light".
