Tomorrow in Bologna the curtain rises on the XXXV National Congress of the Italian Society of Preventive and Social Pediatrics (Sipps). The event, entitled 'Pediatrics 5P – Predictive, Preventive, Personalized, Participatory, Proactive', until Saturday 25 November brings together over 400 pediatricians at the Royal Hotel Carlton in the Emilia-Romagna capital, ready to discuss the numerous issues that concern the health of children and adolescents: from the oral health of minors in the pediatrician's office to the bioethics of developmental age, from medically assisted procreation to neurodevelopmental disorders, from responsive parenting to the management of fever and cough.
In Bologna the spotlight is also on formula milk, prevention in endocrinology, reproductive health, short stature, immunodeficiencies, vaccination anti-influenza, extraskeletal effects of vitamin D, use of the antibiotics in respiratory infections in childhood, sport in developmental age and eating disorders.
During the three-day event, there will also be space for artificial intelligence, telepediatrics, pediatric screening for type 1 diabetes and celiac disease, fever and pain management, atopic dermatitis, and life-saving maneuvers.
The complete program of the XXXV National Sipps Congress can be consulted at the following link:
https://www.sipps.it/evento/pediatrics-5p/. “The 35th Congress which is taking place in Bologna - the president of the Italian Society of Preventive and Social Pediatrics explained to Dire,
Giuseppe DiMauro– has a particular title. As Sipps we already use the 5Ps of Predictive, Preventive, Personalized, Participatory and Proactive, which now
we need to improve and deepen within our documents, in our activities and in our projects”.
“We will open the event with some single-subject courses, of subspecialties - he continued - or in any case linked to activities that concern the pediatrician. I am referring to the course on oral health in the pediatrician's office, which will be developed by Professor Alberto Laino and by some young dentists. In Bologna the Guide to Bioethics of Developmental Age will be presented and we will discuss neurodevelopment: today the main pathologies of children are no longer physical but present psychiatric characteristics, for which it is good to intervene from a young age".
Late Thursday afternoon 23 November, at 18.30, the inauguration of the Congress will take place, which will host interesting lectures, including that of Professor Andrea Pession, “which will explain even more - Di Mauro highlighted - this 'Pediatrics 5P', and that of Professor Ivano Dionigi, who will focus on the topic 'The model child of the adult', in a story that will project us into the future."
Various sessions dedicated to prevention and social issues. “The prevention in endocrinology– stated the number one of Sipps – represents one of our flagships, together with antibiotic therapy and the Guide on immunodeficiencies in the pediatrician's office, aimed at general pediatricians and specialists. Today, a lot has certainly changed in the diagnosis and identification of immunodeficiencies. This Guide has a very high scientific level, starting with the valuable preface by Professor Luigi Notarangelo, who works in the United States. It will be an honor and a pleasure to present this second edition of 2023″.
“Among the topics at the centre of the congress in the Emilia-Romagna region - Giuseppe Di Mauro was keen to point out - influenza vaccine and respiratory syncytial virus, with important innovations in prevention. We will then dedicate a large space to antibiotics. Today the institutions are fighting against'antibiotic resistance and in Italy, at least in pediatric age, there hasn't been a new antibiotic for over 20 years. We must therefore take into account the drugs we have available today, which are still extremely effective, to avoid antibiotic resistance and side effects".
“In this regard - he recalled - the Ministry of Health has formed a group that has placed our Guide in the Scientific Committee and as a pediatric document with the aim of finding solutions precisely at the level of antibiotic resistance”. Innovation certainly occupies the first places of the topics on which the pediatricians of Sipps will focus. “The telemedicine, telepediatrics and artificial intelligence - declared President Di Mauro - are not part of the future, they are topics of common use and that will have to be implemented more and more in everyday activities".
The president of the Italian Society of Preventive and Social Pediatrics then informed that "we will also talk about the extraskeletal effects of vitamin D, topic of one of the next Consensus, and of sport. A truly rich program, therefore, which will be completed on Saturday 25 November with the important presence of Professor Emanuele Bosi, Charles Catassi and the Vice President of the Chamber, George Mulé. Right in Montecitorio a law on pediatric screening for type 1 diabetes and celiac disease was approved, investments have already been allocated in pilot centers in some regions of Italy. Family pediatricians will intervene, especially in cases of type 1 diabetes, and will be able to avoid many complications of diabetic ketoacidosis”.
"Three intense days of great culture, education and specific training for pediatricians - Di Mauro then recalled - and everything that is needed by the health professional of the little ones. On the other hand, we expect a huge participation of very young pediatricians, including pediatricians in training, who will benefit from all our documents free of charge produced this year in paper format, in addition to numerous texts produced in previous years. It is therefore one of the most attended conferences in Italy, an important event enriched by reports and topics aimed at families and adolescents".
The Bologna will also be the venue for the presentation of the 'Ask me' project, arising from the Guide to Gynecology of Childhood and Adolescence, intended for adolescents and their parents. A project created thanks to an innovative language, that of adolescents. "There will be a series of short videos, lasting a maximum of 1 minute - Di Mauro announced - during which a professional will answer your questions, for example on the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, on menstruation, on the whole sexual and emotional part, using scientific language but with methods appropriate to an adolescent".
“A way – concluded Giuseppe Di Mauro – to demonstrate the presence of our scientific society alongside the younger generations, those present and those in the future. Also this year, therefore, Sipps gives and will give an important contribution at 360 degrees”. From Emilia-Romagna to Tuscany: for its 36th National Congress, Sipps makes an appointment in Florence from 5th to 7th July 2024 with the conference entitled 'Preventive and Social Pediatrics – The Planet of the New Generations'.
