The president of the German court in Naumburg has given the green light to the handover to Italy of Filippo Turetta, accused of killing his ex-girlfriend Giulia Cecchettin.

In a statement released this morning, the magistrate states that, on the basis of the documentation attached to the European arrest warrant against Turetta, “there are no obstacles” to the suspect's handover to the Italian authorities, and stresses that Turetta himself accepted it.
The request to hand over Filippo Turetta to Italy for the murder of Giulia Cecchettin arrived yesterday at the Court of Appeal Naumburg, the highest court in the German region of Saxony-Anhalt, which is responsible for deciding on the transfer of the young man to the Italian authorities within “a few days”.
“The files were submitted yesterday to the Higher Regional Court in Naumburg,” wrote Chief Prosecutor Tatjana Letz, referring to the Oberlandesgericht (OLG), a sort of appellate court, and in response to a question about whether the Italian request had been submitted to the same Attorney General’s Office that is supposed to instruct the OLG to examine it.
“If the request of the Attorney General is accepted, the Italian citizen should be transferred to Italy within a few days. However, I am not able to provide a precise date,” Letz simply added.
Giulia's funeral will be held in Saonara
The funeral of Giulia Cecchettin will most likely be held in Saonara, in the province of Padua, her hometown. The Cecchettin family has already expressed their wish to the municipal administration, and the institutional availability has already been expressed by the mayor Michela Lazzaro.
The timing of the funeral will be dictated by the progress of the investigation, and will depend on the authorization of the Prosecutor's Office to return the body, after the autopsy. The administration has verified the availability of the parish church - the one in Vigonovo is currently undergoing renovations - and the possible arrangement of large screens in the churchyard, in view of a foreseeable large influx of people.
The celebration will be presided over by the bishop of Padua, Monsignor Claudio Cipolla. For the burial, the will is to bury the young woman in the cemetery where her mother, who died a year ago, is already buried.
