The investigation into the death of Gerardina Corsano, the 46-year-old woman from Ariano Irpino (Avellino), who died in hospital on October 31st due to poisoning, as established by tests carried out by the laboratories of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità which definitively excluded the hypothesis of botulism poisoning.
The fact that the woman had been taken ill together with her husband immediately after a dinner at a pizzeria in Ariano Irpino had initially led to the belief that the two had consumed poorly preserved products, a hypothesis later denied by the analyses. After the seizure of the cell phones of her husband, 52-year-old Angelo Meninno, and of some members of the latter's family, ordered by the prosecutor coordinating the investigation, Maria Amalia Capitanio, the investigators underline that there are no new suspects and that there is currently no hypothesis of voluntary homicide. The acquisition of the cell phones would in short be a procedural acquisition, not the result of new investigative hypotheses.
The Benevento Public Prosecutor's Office, led by Aldo Policastro, is instead investigating another avenue: possible contamination due to fertilizers and pesticides, a "toxic infection" caused by the handling of chemical substances used for the preservation of products intended for agriculture (cereals, grain legumes and oil seeds) that the couple sold in the company registered in the wife's name and managed mainly by the husband.
The use of potentially lethal products could suggest a casual poisoning: obviously other and more complex laboratory tests will be needed to find evidence in this regard. Pending tangible evidence, the register of suspects remains registered for manslaughter and injuries the two owners of the pizzeria, husband and wife, where Gerardina had dinner on the evening of October 28, and the doctor of the Emergency Room of the hospital of Ariano Irpino who visited Gerardina and her husband on two separate occasions before discharging them.
The two began to feel unwell immediately after returning home to the Fiumarelle district, on the border between the municipalities of Ariano Irpino and Flumeri. Twice in the following days, the couple went to the emergency room of the “Frangipane” hospital in Ariano Irpino because of the pain they were feeling. After being examined, they were discharged. Then the crisis that led to Gerardina's death, while her husband, admitted to the Cotugno hospital in Naples, managed to survive.
