"The accident that led to the death of 18-year-old Angelo Luigi Cristiano, who died after being hit by a bus on the road connecting Montecorvino Rovella to Giffoni Valle Piana, requires serious reflection on accidents involving bus drivers. A reflection that must first and foremost be cultural and requires legislative intervention."
This is what Gabriele Giorgianni, general secretary of Ugl Autoferrotranvieri, states in a note, speaking about the tragedy that occurred in the area of the province of Salerno in recent days, putting the spotlight on another side of the story.
“In addition to the pain of a broken life and a family that ends up in despair over the loss of their loved one, many times we don't take into account what's on the other side of the coin.
A side that sometimes tells a story that is almost always told in passing: driver negative to the breathalyzer test, careful while driving and without any responsibility for the accident - in this case fatal - that occurred. What happens next is known to few: suspension of the license and the qualification. And here begins the nightmare: economic and social.
First of all, the worker has to pay for a lawyer and until a final sentence the expenses must be paid in advance because the company does not pay a single euro. Subsequently, if the company is not one of the important ones, the worker is put on vacation or suspended without pay because the company cannot afford to assign him to another job.
Thus, people are forced into early retirement or dismissal. A biological and moral damage that is equivalent to social death. All this happens even if the employee in question is not responsible for the accident and is ascertained by the investigations immediately after the facts”.
Carmine Rubino, general secretary of Ugl Salerno, also believes that a cultural and legislative change is needed on the issue: "I know the matter well, having been secretary of Ugl Autoferrotranvieri for 15 years. If it is established by the investigations that the worker is not responsible, we must take note of it and reintroduce him into the production cycle.
A driver without a qualification or license cannot do anything. We need legislation that protects workers in these cases. We need a different way of managing these events also from an insurance point of view. Otherwise there will always be a double tragedy: that of those who die and that of those who see themselves die because of the State's fault".
