The tragic train accident that occurred last night on the Ionian line in Calabria's Alto Cosentino area left two dead and dozens injured. The victims included the train conductor of the regional train connecting the village Sybaris from Cassano allo Ionio and Corigliano Rossano, Mary Pansini, 61 years old and was from Catanzaro and the truck driver Said Hannaoui, 24 years old, of Moroccan nationality.
The regional train Sibari-Catanzaro Lido hit a truck that had gotten stuck on the tracks of a level crossing. In the collision, which occurred in the territory of Corigliano-Rossano, the driver of the convoy and the driver of the rubber-tyred vehicle died. The ten passengers of the train were slightly injured. The Carabinieri, firefighters and 118 vehicles were on site.
The Castrovillari Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation to reconstruct the accident and determine any liability. The investigation is being conducted by the railway police and the Carabinieri. Firefighters and emergency personnel were also at the scene of the accident. Both the locomotive of the train that struck and the truck caught fire after the collision, which occurred at a level crossing.
The flames immediately shot up, illuminating the entire area affected by the accident. What currently appears certain is that the truck was stationary on the tracks when it was struck by the train.

The hypothesis, although the necessary investigations remain, is that the truck driver crossed the tracks just before the level crossing lowered and thus became trapped on the tracks. A few seconds later, the train arrived, traveling at approximately 130 kilometers per hour, and struck the truck head-on.
Rfi and Trenitalia they released a note in which, in reconstructing the dynamics of the accident, it is stated that "The truck occupied the site of a level crossing which, from initial checks, appears to be in regular operation and closed."
The statement also notes that ten passengers, in addition to the train conductor and driver, were on board the train, all of whom were unharmed. The statement also notes that rail traffic is currently suspended between Sibari and Corigliano Rossano and expresses "the grief and condolences of RFI and Trenitalia for the victims."
