The Carabinieri of the Environmental Protection Group Command of Napoli they carried out the seizure of two companies, at the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Torre Annunziata. The preventive seizure orders were issued by the GIP Office of the Court of Torre Annunziata and were based on charges of illegal discharge of industrial wastewater, violation of integrated environmental authorizations and unauthorized waste management, as established by the Consolidated Environmental Act (Legislative Decree 152/2006). The defendants are also accused of impeding control activities.
These seizures follow a previous operation carried out by the Carabinieri Command Environmental Protection Group of Naples, which took place on October 27, 2023, which led to the seizure of another company in Striano for the same environmental violations. The investigations, conducted by the Carabinieri of the Ecological Operations Unit (NOE) of Naples in collaboration with ARPAC and under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Torre Annunziata, revealed that the activities of three companies had violated environmental regulations regarding the discharge of wastewater into waterways and waste management.
The NOE investigations revealed several violations, including the uncontrolled storage and abandonment of unsorted waste, including hazardous waste, on unpaved land. This waste was discharged directly into the public sewers and then into the Sarno River, without any purification process. Furthermore, the checks revealed illegal discharges of water from industrial processes, which also contained hazardous substances, into the public sewers, resulting in pollution of the Sarno River.
The investigations also uncovered substantial changes to the purification plants, which had been made to avoid expensive purification processes and to hinder controls. This led to exceeding the limit parameters set by the legislation for discharges into watercourses.
In particular, the inefficiency of the purification plants, which had been out of operation for some time, allowed industrial wastewater to be discharged directly into the Sarno River, causing serious pollution.
