The island of Ischia from its origins to today, a naturalistic, landscape, historical and architectural paradise to love and preserve.
This was the theme of the debate promoted by Odilia Telese and held at the Mondadori bookshop in Ischia during which Ischian writers Ciro Cenatiempo, Franco Mattera and Pino Macrì met. Improving the ethical relationship with the natural environment of the green island is a commitment that local society must take on in a concrete socio-economic perspective, capable of combining quality tourism with the obligation to protect the territory.
This was one of the main messages launched during the meeting. “We must feel the duty to protect the island of Ischia because it offers us everything. Food, sea, views and places that can give us tranquility and serenity”, Odilia Telese, the owner of the Mondadori bookstore in Ischia, said during her introductory speech to the meeting.
“It has become a necessity to protect our Island by moving from words to deeds”, stated the journalist and writer Ciro Cenatiempo, author of the anthropological essay “A Thousand Gardens in the Middle of the Sea”. “Three Ischian writers – Cenatiempo began – have decided to celebrate a necessity.
That of loving the Island with words but also with concrete facts to remember that the environment, nature and ethics are the same thing. A message of culture but also politics addressed to everyone”. “Ischia has given us so much for centuries, now we islanders must give it back the splendor it deserves”, said Franco Mattera, agronomist and author of the collection “Kitty, the tiger cat and other stories”.
"We must give back - Mattera explained - what Ischia has given us, has given to many generations. On our part there has been an abuse so, now, we must give something back to give it back the splendor and beauty it deserves. Qualities, these, that have been partly lost".
There were also many tourists present at Mondadori who said they were enthusiastic about having listened to the very interesting debate.
“I thank the Mondadori bookstore – said one of the tourists present – for this meeting. We met some Ischian writers who awakened in us the desire to rediscover our land too. I came to Ischia fifteen years ago, I gladly returned. I really like the Island, it is stimulating and fascinating”.
At the beginning of the works, Ciro Cenatiempo wanted to remember the internationally renowned pizza chef Gaetano Fazio who passed away a few hours earlier. “Tonight – declared Cenatiempo – I want to remember the most important ambassador of the island of Ischia and Campania in the world: I am talking about Gaetano Fazio, 73 years old. A friend not only of mine, a friend of Ischia, a friend of love for the island of Ischia”.
