“It seems impossible. But then they talk about scotch tape, about a knife, I don’t know what to think… maybe he wanted to kidnap her to prevent her from supporting her thesis, and then the situation degenerated. In our opinion, some vein in his head burst. There really is no explanation.”
In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Filippo Turetta's parents, father Nicola Turetta and mother Elisabetta, are visibly shocked by the news of their son's arrest in Germany on charges of killing his ex-girlfriend Giulia Cecchettin.
“They talk about possession, sexism, inability to accept that she was better than him. It’s absolutely none of that. I’m convinced that something in her brain has stopped working,” adds the father, the only one of the two who can speak.
“Immense pain for Giulia, ours is not a patriarchal family”
“We feel immense pain for poor Giulia. We are close to her family, we are devastated by what happened. We think about her constantly. It hurts us to see ourselves pointed out as inadequate parents, as a family that is a symbol of patriarchy,” continues the father of the 22-year-old.
When he was stopped, “we think he was in a state of confusion. He wandered aimlessly, he didn't come back because he was probably afraid. A sign that he didn't have a plan.” While waiting for the hearing to decide on his surrender, “They haven't let us talk to him yet. They told us he's very upset.
If they don’t bring him back to Italy in the next few days, we will organize ourselves to go to Germany. He is still our son. What should we do? He will pay for what he did. We are still his parents.”
Another son is waiting for them at home. “It’s not easy, he’s suffering a lot. Last night he was at the table and heard on the news that ‘the killer’ had been stopped in Germany. It’s hard to hear people talking about a brother like that. Filippo has never been a violent boy at home. We’re all shocked,” concludes Nicola Turetta.
