Cases of childhood pneumonia are increasing not only in China, but also in France and Vietnam: "The current situation shouldn't cause alarm, but institutional monitoring is certainly necessary," emphasized Fabrizio Pregliasco, a virologist at the University of Milan, during an interview on the program 'Gr1' on Rai Radio 1.
According to the expert, it is essential to explore the causes of this increase in pneumonia, verifying whether it is due to the bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae, which is one of the plausible candidates, considering the characteristics of the pathology, or to the combination of several common respiratory viruses.
Matteo Bassetti, an infectious disease specialist at the Policlinico San Martino in Genoa, takes to social media to highlight the negative consequences of the “no vax” movement. He denounces the spread of pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae resistant to azithromycin, an antibiotic used recklessly and without evidence in the treatment of Covid.
Bassetti accuses “novaxism” and “home care” practices of causing harm such as the loss of vaccination coverage in children for diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, polio, in addition to misinformation about the Covid vaccine and the inappropriate use of drugs such as hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin. He also highlights the increase in antibiotic resistance to azithromycin in respiratory bacteria, including Mycoplasmas.
In a video on Facebook, Bassetti reiterates the association of pneumonia with the increase in resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae and criticizes the overuse of antibiotics during the Covid pandemic. He emphasizes that the improper use of these drugs has contributed to making the bacteria more robust. Despite the worrying situation, the infectious disease specialist reassures that Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a known microorganism and that other weapons will be found to deal with it.
