On November 23, exactly 43 years after the tragic earthquake that shook Campania and the surrounding regions in 1980, causing death and destruction, the Royal Palace of Caserta will dedicate an entire day to the Terrae Motus collection and its creator, with an extended opening of the Royal Apartments and a new dedicated area.
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the donation of the Terrae Motus collection to the Royal Palace of Caserta in 1993, the MiC institute remembers the great Neapolitan gallery owner Lucio Amelio, giving his name to a room in the Royal Apartments. The space intends to tell the origins of the ambitious project that lasted over ten years, in which Lucio Amelio conceived a collection of works of art created by the most important artists of the international contemporary scene of the XNUMXs, to respond with the creative force of art to the destructive power of the earthquake.
The Lucio Amelio Hall, located at the end of the Royal Apartments route in the immediate vicinity of Andy Warhol's iconic work "Hurry Up", will be inaugurated on November 23 at 20.00:1992 pm with a permanent video screening taken from the documentary made by Mario Franco for the first exhibition of the Terrae Motus collection at the Royal Palace of Caserta in 30 (the full video is kept at the Mario Franco Archives of Casa Morra). Thirty-one years ago, a selection of XNUMX works chosen directly by Lucio Amelio was presented and set up with the contribution of Corrado Teano, Mimmo Scognamiglio and Roberto Manfredi in the eighteenth-century back rooms of the Royal Palace.
The following year, in 1993, Lucio Amelio donated the entire collection to the Royal Palace of Caserta in a testamentary bequest, which had reached 72 works by 67 artists. Since 2020, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the 1980 earthquake, the works of Terrae Motus have been included in the rooms of the Royal Apartments of the Royal Palace of Caserta with a new installation, which seeks to ideally connect to Lucio Amelio's original project of wanting to 'shake up' the critical thinking of the public, making the historical spaces of the Vanvitellian complex dialogue with contemporary works of art.
On November 23, the day in which the violent earthquake is remembered, the Royal Palace of Caserta will be open with extended hours until 23.15pm, with last admission at 22.15pm.
During the day (at 11.00:12.00, 17.00:18.00, 19.00:20.00, 21.00:17.00, 4:20.00, XNUMX:XNUMX and XNUMX:XNUMX) there will be guided tours of the collection led by the Museum and Opera Laboratori staff. To book, write to re-ce.valorizzazione@cultura.gov.it indicating the chosen time. Entrance tickets are available online and at the ticket office.
