I police of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of Napoli they returned the "beggar" to the Royal Palace of Caserta Crib royal, a shepherd object of theft about forty years ago together with other pieces belonging to King Charles, and recently found.
In May 2021, an admirer of Neapolitan nativity scenes informed the Carabinieri that he had identified for sale at a well-known Neapolitan auction house a shepherd probably stolen from the Royal Nativity Scene of the Royal Palace of Caserta.
The find was found to be among those actually stolen in the 80s, and was thus seized by the Carabinieri who, by order of the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office, then returned it to the Museum.
The investigations have reconstructed what happened after the theft of the 41-centimeter-high wooden figurine depicting a beggar: the precious piece of the Nativity scene first ended up in a private collection, then was put up for auction as part of bankruptcy proceedings, and then ended up at the Neapolitan auction house, where it “reappeared.”
“The Beggar – announced the general director of the Royal Palace of Caserta Tiziana Maffei – It will soon return to its place in the central rock of the Court Nativity Scene, so that it can be admired by everyone during the Christmas period".
