There are five professors from the University of Naples Frederick II among the “Highly Cited Researchers 2023”, the most cited researchers in the world.
In the ranking, drawn up by Web of Science Group – Clarivate Analyticyes, in fact, Raffaele Capasso, Danilo Ercolini, Angelo Antonio Izzo, Edoardo Pasolli and Veronica Scuotto are present, scientists from Federico II who have produced the most cited scientific publications, giving significant contributions in their sectors of activity.
- “Highly Cited Researchers” are scientists who have produced the most cited publications exerting a significant influence in the research field, and is based on the analysis performed by the bibliometric experts of the Institute of Scientific Information of the Web of Science Group.
This year, Clarivate awards for the highest number of citations of their scientific works went to 7.125 researchers from all over the world, of which 115 work in Italy, including universities, research institutes and institutions, the tenth country in the world for the number of most cited researchers.
Of the 7.125 awards, 3.793 went to highly cited researchers in 20 fields, the other 3.332 were awarded to researchers with outstanding performance in multiple fields (cross-field). Their articles are in the top 1% of citations. Of the entire world population of scientists in all disciplines, 'Highly Cited Researchers' are 1 in 1.000.
In fact, only 0,1% of researchers in the world receive this recognition, which represents an important parameter in the world rankings of university quality, as well as being one of the major international recognitions for a researcher. Multidisciplinary studies, from food quality to human health, have confirmed among the Highly Cited Researchers (cross-field), Danilo Ercolini, Director of the Department of Agriculture, already present in the Clarivate 2022 ranking. Professor of Microbiology, Ercolini focuses his scientific activity on the study of the microbiome in food and humans.
Particularly appreciated were the studies on the impact of diet on the human microbiome and the contributions on the study of the effects of the Mediterranean diet.
Among the cross-field researchers of the Department of Agriculture are also: Raffaele Capasso and Edoardo Pasolli, professors of pharmacology and telecommunications respectively, who dedicate their research activity mainly to pharmacognosy and the study of the biological properties of natural compounds active on the gastrointestinal tract, the first, and to the development and application of computational approaches and machine learning methodologies for metagenomic data, the second.
Of particular note are the multidisciplinary studies in the field of the microbiome, with particular emphasis on the human one and its connection with the state of health. Instead, the research of Pharmacology focuses on the scientific disciplinary sector Angel Anthony Izzo, Deputy Director of the Department of Pharmacy, for the fourth time among the Highly Cited Researchers in the field of Pharmacology and Toxicology, which mainly deals with the pharmacological study and potential therapeutic applications of plant-derived compounds, with particular interest in the potential of cannabinoids and natural compounds that bind Transient Receptor Potential Channels.
The attention with which it focused on small and medium-sized enterprises, knowledge management, digital transformation, in particular human-machine interaction, and entrepreneurship, have characterised the work of Veronica Scuotto, professor of economics and business management at the Department of Economics, Management and Institutions, allowing her to be included among the Highly Cited Researchers cross-field 2023.
