“Turetta is often defined as a monster, but he is not a monster. A monster is an exception, a person external to society, a person for whom society should not take responsibility.
And yet there is responsibility. The 'monsters' are not sick, they are healthy children of the patriarchy, of the rape culture".
Elena Cecchettin, Giulia's sister, wrote this in a letter to the 'Corriere della Sera', speaking about her sister's murder.
“Rape culture is what legitimizes any behavior that harms the figure of women, starting with things that are sometimes not even given importance but that are important, such as control, possessiveness, catcalling. Every man is privileged by this culture,” she continues. “It is often said 'not all men.'
Not all men, but they are still men. No man is good if he does nothing to dismantle the society that privileges them so much. It is the responsibility of men in this patriarchal society given their privilege and power, to educate and call out friends and colleagues as soon as they hear the slightest hint of sexist violence”.
“Tell that friend who checks out his girlfriend, tell that colleague who catcalls passers-by, make yourselves hostile to behaviors of this kind accepted by society, which are nothing but the prelude to femicide – concludes Giulia's sister – Femicide is a State murder, because the State does not protect us, because it does not protect us.
Femicide is not a crime of passion, it is a crime of power. We need widespread sexual and emotional education, we need to teach that love is not possession. We need to fund anti-violence centers and we need to give those who need it the opportunity to ask for help. For Giulia, don't have a minute of silence, for Giulia, burn everything". (
Dad posts messages with Giulia on social media
A red heart and a screenshot of the messages with his daughter. This is the last post by Gino Cecchettin, Giulia's father, on social media. "I hope I didn't wake you up, I went to take the bus to have breakfast with my friends. I love you," reads the message sent by Giulia. "Thank you, love, me too," replied the father.
