The Carabinieri of the Rome Viale Libia Station have arrested a 20 year old Naples seriously suspected of the crime of extortion against an elderly woman. During the daily territorial control services, the Carabinieri noticed the young man wandering suspiciously among the condominiums of Viale Somalia (African quarter), and stopped him for a check, finding him in possession of numerous gold jewels, 750 euros and lira banknotes.
At that point the Carabinieri carried out further investigations. According to the evidence collected, the young man, shortly before, had telephoned an elderly woman, 76 years old, originally from the province of Rieti, pretending to be a self-styled “Carabinieri marshal”, informing her that her son had been involved in a road accident and inviting her husband, 83 years old, to show up at a phantom barracks to reach his son, convincing him in effect to leave the house, leaving his wife alone.
Once he reached the woman at her home, the 20-year-old allegedly convinced the elderly victim to hand over the money and jewelry to him, to avoid criminal consequences for her son. At that point, the Carabinieri stopped the suspect and recovered all the stolen goods, which were returned to the elderly woman. The Court of Rome validated the arrest. It should be noted that the proceedings are in the preliminary investigation phase, so the suspect is to be considered innocent until a final sentence is reached.
