No New Year's Eve fireworks for Nicola Rullo, known as "'o nfamone", the undisputed boss of the Contini clan, who has been on the run for eight months.
He was captured last night in Alicante, southeastern Spain, where he was arrested by Italian law enforcement with the support of the Spanish police.
Rullo, the head of the Contini clan, is currently being held in a Spanish prison awaiting a hearing regarding the extradition request submitted by Italian authorities. The hearing is scheduled for today, and according to rumors reported by "Roma," Rullo, represented by lawyer Domenico Dello Iacono, appears not to oppose the request to be handed over to Italian judicial authorities.
This arrest marks the end of a brief period of freedom for Rullo, who was released in July last year after years of detention. His release was achieved thanks to a significant sentence reduction granted by the Court of Appeal of Napoli, following defense arguments by attorney Dello Iacono. Initially sentenced to ten years in prison, Rullo had his sentence reduced to just two years and eight months.
After his release, Rullo spent three and a half years in pre-trial detention, but at the end of October last year, when he was handed an additional four-year prison sentence, he escaped.

His time on the run came to an end when the Carabinieri, following the movements of some of his relatives, managed to track him down and arrest him last night. The Carabinieri, thanks to a targeted and complex technical activity coordinated by the Naples Prosecutor's Office, managed to follow the movements of his family members, which allowed them to reconstruct and document his relational network and habits.
Thanks to the continuous exchange of information with the Spanish police, the Carabinieri and Udyco thus tracked down Rullo at a well-known resort in Alicante where the 53-year-old had taken refuge for at least 20 days to escape capture.
The man will serve 4 years, 2 months and 8 days in prison for mafia-type association. The 53-year-old is now in prison awaiting the extradition order.
Rullo's story bears similarities to a previous arrest in 2017, when he was captured while awaiting an appeal for aggravated extortion, subsequently escaping before his ten-year prison sentence was upheld.
