Wednesday 20 December at 21 pm at the Teatro Nuovo the live performance of Elina Duni, a singer born in Tirana and raised in Switzerland, one of the most intense and modern voices, accompanied on guitar by Rob Luft.
The duo skillfully moves between the typical vibrations of the Albanian and Kosovar tradition.
After the opening concert by Mario Lucio, a musician from Cape Verde and former Minister of Culture of the African island with guest Marco Zurzolo, the “Tracce contemporanee” review curated by La Bazzarra and Dedalus with the artistic direction of Gigi Di Luca continues, taking place in historic sites in the neighborhoods of “visceral” Naples.
Among the most intense voices of the new European music scene, Elina Duni arrives in Switzerland as a child from her native Albania. During her formative years she approaches music and over time she develops her own personal path, establishing herself as a rising star in the European jazz scene.
In her duo concert with British musician and composer Rob Luft, Elina presents songs from her latest albums “Lost Ships” and “A Time to Remember”, published by the prestigious German label ECM, where she sings in 9 different languages drawing on the traditional repertoire of Albania, Kosovo, Armenia and Southern Italy, but also original compositions and covers of Serge Gainsbourg, Nina Simone, Billie Holliday.
Elina develops her personal expressive research thanks to the fusion of traditional melodies with jazz sounds and painting a sound picture in which different musical stories intersect, echoing her childhood, her exile and her reconciliation with the two worlds that shaped her.
“Songs of Love and Exile is a concert about contemporary issues that we all face: the tragic history of the migration crisis in Europe and also the imminent ecological fallout due to the destruction of nature. It is also a concert about places we have been and loved, places that no longer exist or continue to exist only as a fragment of our imagination. There are songs that touch on influences from the past, with the sounds of Albania and Mediterranean folklore always present. We wanted to explore other musical roots as well: timeless jazz ballads, French songs, American folk songs… Alongside the severity found in many of these songs, there is a lightness that pervades everything and we believe that this light can, and will, eclipse these difficult times. In every tear, there is a light that rises.” (Elina Duni & Rob Luft)
The initiative is promoted and financed by the Municipality of Naples as part of the project “Naples City of Music”. Free concerts with mandatory reservation on Eventbrite.
