The Prosecutor's Office Avellino has opened an investigation into the waiting lists at the “San Giuseppe Moscati” hospital.
Article Key Points
The investigation, ordered by the prosecutor Vincenzo Russo, started after the reports of CitizenshipActive and of the union Nursind on the disparity between the number of public services and those paid for, in intramoenia.
In particular, it emerged that compared to just seven specialist cardiology visits in the public sector, as many as 979 had been carried out in intramoenia. Under normal conditions, waiting times for the same visit were no less than six monthsi, while waiting times were reduced to fifteen days if done paid.
The investigations of the Prosecutor's Office are still ongoing and there are currently no people under investigation. However, the investigation could lead to hypotheses of crime, such as abuse of office or fraud against the State.
The survey has sparked a heated debate about the state of public health in Italy. Many have highlighted the disparity in treatment between citizens who can afford to pay for health services and those who have to wait months to obtain the necessary care.
Six months for specialist visits instead of 15 days for paid ones
The Moscati affair is just the latest example of a problem that has plagued public health in Italy for years. It is necessary to intervene to reduce waiting lists and guarantee all citizens fair and timely access to health care.
