The State Police, acting on orders from the Catania District Prosecutor's Office, conducted a large-scale operation against audiovisual piracy. The investigation, coordinated by the Catania Prosecutor's Office and the Rome Postal Police Service, led to the identification of a transnational criminal organization consisting of 21 individuals operating in Italy and abroad.
The syndicate distributed live programming and on-demand content, protected by television rights owned by the most popular television platforms, to a huge number of users. The content was distributed through illegal IPTV systems, generating monthly profits of several million euros.
The investigation revealed that the suspects, to evade investigations, used encrypted messaging applications, fake identities, and false documents. The latter were also used to register telephone numbers, credit cards, television subscriptions, and server rentals.
The searches, carried out in several Italian cities, resulted in the seizure of numerous IT devices, including servers, routers, modems, and smartphones.
