The attackers of the 16-year-old of Albanian origin who was stabbed in Santa Maria Capua Vetere (Caserta) in the area of the Amphitheater Campano, the heart of the city's nightlife, on the afternoon of December 24th. The 19-year-old, who had already been arrested on December 29th because he was about to flee abroad, was joined by five other participants in the attack, arrested this morning by officers from the Caserta Police Headquarters' Flying Squad and the Santa Maria Capua Vetere Police Station on the orders of the local court's investigating judge, Alessandra Grammatica.
Those arrested are all between the ages of 19 and 24, all Italian except for a 20-year-old of Moroccan origin who has been in Italy since he was very young. All, including the 19-year-old who has been in prison for days, have criminal records—some for drug offenses, some for crimes against persons—and come from families that are poor or involved in illicit trafficking. The 16-year-old, who was seriously injured—the blows he received punctured his lung—is still in hospital in Caserta, while his brother, who was beaten, was immediately released.
According to the investigations by the Santa Maria Capua Vetere Public Prosecutor's Office (Prosecutor Pierpaolo Bruni, Deputy Prosecutor Armando Bosso) and the police, based on the videos that captured the attack, the testimonies of the victims and several young people present, and the partial confession of the 19-year-old arrested in late December, the Christmas Eve incident was an assault, not a fight, as initial investigations seemed to suggest. However, the motives for the attack remain unknown, as the investigating judge himself noted in the pre-trial detention order.
The beating may have been based on a trivial motive (a drink accidentally spilled by the 16-year-old on one of the attackers), but disagreements related to rivalries of another nature cannot be ruled out. In any case, it is certain that the 19-year-old violently struck the minor; the 16-year-old then went to his brother for help, who demanded an explanation from the attacker, only to be hit in the head with a bottle. At that point, the 19-year-old was joined by the other five suspects, who surrounded the two brothers and beat them mercilessly, particularly targeting the 16-year-old, who was struck with a chair with a sharp iron stem and likely with a knife, which has not been found.
