PRESENTATION
Classical Neapolitan song represents one of the pinnacles of Italian song, having over the years become a symbol of Italian music throughout the world. Numerous songs, performed over time by various world-famous artists, have contributed to the spread of Neapolitan music throughout the world and are considered and recognized among the most classic Italian symbols in the international collective imagination.
Neapolitan song, or simply "canzone" as it is called in Japan (there's a museum dedicated to it in Tokyo), has always played a fundamental role in disseminating the culture and image of the city of Naples. Its ability to continually renew itself while remaining tied to its origins and traditions has enabled it to interpret and give voice to the city's myriad facets over the years. This is the backdrop for the intense and unique documentary film, shot on the streets of Naples by Italian-American director John Turturro. He sought to "narrate" the Neapolitan song by retracing its history, not with nostalgic tones, but rather by emphasizing its vitality and modernity. But precisely because of this intensity and this strong connection to the reality of Naples, the film could not remain "confined" to movie theaters, and the strength and vitality of its protagonists inevitably prompted the need to make it a live performance. Thus was born, again from an idea of John Turturro himself, the show Passione Live, produced and staged by Arealive, a Neapolitan company committed to promoting Neapolitan artists nationally and internationally.
The American director and Arealive have synergistically joined forces driven by a new awareness of the compelling and emotional charge of songs that have told the story and evolution of Italy and that still today represent the national identity abroad.
Passione Live was a "colorful caravan" of top-level musicians and performers who set out to spread and revive classic and contemporary "Neapolitan song" through an exciting tour that lasted from 2011 to 2017 and resulted in a series of sold-out performances at prestigious locations and festivals.
Passione Live has managed to offer the viewer the possibility of a direct encounter with Naples mediated by the sensitivity of all the artists involved, capable of energetically proposing an image of the city and its history, told through their emotions and interpretative skills.
Four years after the end of that fantastic adventure that saw names of the caliber of James Senese Napoli Centrale, Pietra Montecorvino, Almamegretta & Raiz, Enzo Gragnaniello, Eugenio Bennato, Peppe Barra, Teresa De Sio, Misia and many other performers and musicians alternate and collaborate on stage, in January 2021 Arealive created a second chapter of the Passione Live project, which offers on stage the passing of the baton from the old to the new generations of Neapolitan artists who in recent years have been able to carry Neapolitan music forward and in many cases give us new songs that have rightfully become among the most important on the Italian and international music scene.
A contemporary and unique show, capable of surprising, exciting and entertaining the audience but above all of making them discover the desire to lose themselves in the pulsating heart of a timeless city, Naples, where music is an expression and an integral part of a culture unique in the world.
Passione Live, like the film and unlike the film, will describe the rich Neapolitan melodic heritage in a seductive encounter between the illustrious past of traditional song and the creative soul of contemporary Naples, through the intense interpretations of the numerous artists involved.
