The investigating judge of the Northern Naples Court has ordered house arrest for Gaetano Santaniello, the 45-year-old accused of murdering his aunt Concetta Russo, 55, who was killed by an accidental shot during New Year's Eve celebrations at a home in Afragola, in the province of Naples.
The preliminary investigations judge's decision, which rejected the arrest warrant issued by the North Naples Prosecutor's Office for manslaughter, illegal possession of a weapon in a public place, and receiving stolen goods, comes after the validation hearing held this morning at the Poggioreale prison in Naples.

Santaniello, represented by attorney Francesca Salvatici, confirmed to the judge his version of events: that the shot was fired inadvertently from the gun (later found to be stolen) he was showing to his relatives, believing it to be completely unloaded. The defense had requested that the arrest be annulled and that precautionary measures not be applied, or that it be changed to house arrest.
