Yesterday morning, an important operation took place in the prison di Avellino highlighting the outstanding work of the staff of Penitentiary Police and raising critical questions about the Italian prison system. The news was reported by Orlando Scocca, Regional Coordinator for Campania.
“During a routine check, a significant amount of cocaine, hidden with great cunning inside the jacket of a prisoner returning from leave. The weight of the narcotic substance amounts to 100 grams. This episode highlights not only the professionalism and readiness of our staff, but also the broader problem related to security and control in Italian prison facilities”.
Mirko Manna, FP CGIL Security Sector, adds: "This episode, while revealing the effectiveness and dedication of our agents, sheds light on a worrying reality: the current state of Italian prisons, marked by overcrowding and structural deficiencies, requires urgent attention. It is unacceptable that the Minister of In-Justice Nordio remains inert in the face of these critical issues. The total absence of concrete actions to improve the working conditions of Penitentiary Police personnel is a cause for great concern. We urgently call for targeted interventions and a comprehensive strategy to address the problems of the penitentiary system, in order to guarantee safety, dignity and justice for all".
