An 55 year old from Mercogliano, in the province of Avellino, was arrested at dawn today near the Avellino Ovest toll booth on the A16.
The man, presumably drunk and in a state of confusion, drove the wrong way on the highway to escape a police check. While fleeing, he attempted to get rid of a 7,65 caliber pistol with the serial number scratched off and a round in the chamber.
The man refused to take a breathalyzer test and it was discovered that he did not have a driver's license, which had been revoked, and that the car was not covered by insurance. By order of the Prosecutor's Office, he was transferred to the Avellino prison.
Investigations are currently underway to determine the origin of the weapon and whether it was used in criminal activities.
