IThe football world has been rocked by an unprecedented event in Belgium, where a top-flight match between Anderlecht and Genk will have to be replayed due to a refereeing error.
The federation's disciplinary council has decided to cancel the match played on December 23, after a sensational refereeing error was confirmed by the VAR.
It all started with a penalty kicked by Genk player Heynen, whose shot was saved by goalkeeper Schmeichel. However, the ball was rebounded into the net by Sor. The goal was disallowed because Sor had entered the penalty area too early.
However, what triggered the decision to replay the match was the fact that two Anderlecht players had done the same thing. As a result, the penalty had to be retaken, and this was the basis of Genk's appeal.
Anderlecht were not happy with the decision to replay the match, saying that any refereeing errors could now be punished elsewhere. The decision to replay the match has raised concerns about the implications it could have on future refereeing errors in football.
