It will be possible to save the mural dedicated to Maradona by the Neapolitan street artist Jorit who is located in Taverna del Ferro, the so-called 'Bronx' of the district of San Giovanni a Teduccio, eastern suburbs of Napoli, where a housing redevelopment project will begin on February 2 in an area that is now particularly degraded?

The mural is one of those that pay homage to the unforgettable Argentine champion Napoli. Another, by another artist, is instead a daily destination for tourists from all over the world in the Spanish Quarter area. The maxi project of the Municipality, financed by the Pnrr for 106 million euros, involves 360 families who will finally be able to have a dignified placement.

It will start with the demolition of two large buildings that were built after the earthquake of '80. On the facade there are murals by Jorit dedicated to Maradona and Che Guevara: inevitable - as reported by Repubblica Napoli, dealing with the matter which is also reported today by the Corriere della Sera - their demolition.

Residents are demanding a solution that can preserve them, especially since they're somewhat of a tourist attraction in the city. Many locals have expressed their support for the artwork's preservation. Jorit intervened, saying it's a positive thing for people to have new homes, but expressed his hope that the mural can be saved. Construction begins in less than a month, so a solution will need to be found quickly.

Residents occupied the city council building

And that's why since this morning, about fifty people from the 'ex Taverna del Ferro' protest committee, a social housing block in the San Giovanni a Teduccio neighborhood, have been occupying the office of city councilor Sergio Colella in the City Council building on Via Verdi in Naples.

The protesters are demanding that, in view of the demolition of the apartment blocks and the redevelopment of the area, the right to housing be guaranteed to all 360 families who have been living there since 2014."They requested and obtained," reads a statement sent to ANSA, "the monthly rent payment, which is being paid regularly even though residency is being denied." "We will remain here," the protesters declare, "until we secure a meeting so that, after years of struggle, our right to housing is guaranteed."
