Strict controls by the Carabinieri on the sweets on sale for the Epiphany in the province of CasertaThe military conducted targeted checks on the labeling of confectionery products typically sold as stocking fillers. Dozens of businesses and retail outlets in the Caserta province were inspected, where administrative irregularities regarding specific regulations for the agri-food sector were discovered.
In particular in the municipalities of Curti, marcianise, Capodrise and Maddaloni. The inspections involved several points of sale, where thousands of mixed sweets and mini snacks were found to be being sold in bulk in baskets. These were found to be completely or partially lacking the required labelling containing mandatory consumer information, as they had been stripped of the original outer packaging containing the individual units for sale. This is despite the fact that some of the individual items clearly stated, in several languages, that they could not be sold individually.
Furthermore, since they were not packaged for sale, the ingredients and best-before date were also missing, both of which are mandatory information for purchasers. Finally, the sale of various types of "chocolates and sweets" was also discovered, which were completely anonymous and lacked any labeling, including the production batch number or any other information that could link them to the traceability documentation.
The campaign concluded with the seizure of approximately 200 kilos of confectionery, including chocolates, sweets, and snacks, and with the imposition by the forestry officers of administrative fines totaling nearly €25000.
