On November 24, 2017, Michele Grauso, 30 years old, originally from San Nicola la Strada, was hit in the neck and head by a bullet fired from the Beretta 92 pistol that his classmate, a thirty-year-old originally from the province of Naples, was handling inside a dormitory at the Guardia di Finanza training and specialization center in Orvieto.
The young financier's conditions immediately appeared very serious and over time he was admitted to a private hospital for long-term patients in Bologna, and then to the Maggiore hospital in the Emilian capital where he died on May 10, 2020, after more than two years of agony.
The court of Terni convicted the defendant of manslaughter and violation of workplace safety regulations. The sentence was suspended.
The defendant's lawyer, Gianluca Brionne, announced that he will appeal.
“The event occurred due to negligence not supported by the violation of workplace safety regulations”, the lawyer explained. “And the death, as emerged from the forensic medical examinations, despite a situation that had been compromised for over two years, occurred due to Covid”.
Michele Grauso's family expressed satisfaction with the sentence.
“It's an important step forward”, said the young financier's father. “Justice has recognized the guilt of the accused.”
The incident caused a great outcry and led to an internal investigation by the Guardia di Finanza to ascertain the responsibilities for the incident.
