Three years after the death of Diego Maradona, the Court of Cassation accepted the appeal presented by the champion's heirs against the accusation of alleged tax evasion of approximately 37 million euros.
The legal issue concerns the fees paid by the Napoli to the famous Argentine footballer in the second half of the the eighties. In the management of image rights on foreign accounts (specifically, in Liechtenstein) by two foreign companies, a tax evasion took place which, initially quantified as 40 billion lire at the time, it later transformed into 37 million euro over the years, of which more than half represents default interest.
The tax section of the Court of Cassation, chaired by Roberta Crucitti -as anticipated by Il Messaggero-has accepted the appeal presented by the lawyer Max Garzilli, legal representative of Diego Armando Maradona together with the lawyer Angelo Pisani.
The Supreme Court's decision means the entire matter will be referred to the Campania Tax Commission, which will have to reexamine the case. In the event of a final negative assessment, any outstanding debts could fall to the player's heirs.

The affair, which began in the early 1990s, was marked by a series of appeals and seizures. At an earlier stage, Maradona's lawyers had requested an extension of the self-defense order, requesting that the player be granted the tax amnesty, which Napoli had already obtained for the same matter.
However, the provincial and regional tax commissions rejected these requests, thus prompting the lawyers to take the case to the Supreme Court. Il Messaggero recalls that already on March 11, 2021, the Supreme Court of Cassation had ruled that Maradona could benefit from the amnesty, and the lower courts should have examined his tax position only for any residual debts towards theInland Revenue, confirming this orientation also in the latest pronouncement.
