Gaetano Cimmino, former mayor of Castellammare di Stabia, will not be able to stand in the future administrative elections scheduled for this spring.
This is the result of a ruling by the Torre Annunziata court, following the dissolution of his administration for alleged Camorra infiltration in February 2022, which determined his ineligibility for the next two rounds of elections.
Similarly, former councilors Fulvio Calì and Giovanni Russo and former city council president Emanuele D'Apice received a similar ban.
D'Apice is known for thanking and praising his father, now deceased and previously convicted for alleged ties to the Cesarano Camorra clan, in his inaugural speech.
However, the ruling of the panel chaired by Marianna Lopiano (with Maria Rosaria Barbato as reporting judge) did not include the names of other politicians implicated in the report of the access commission that led to the dissolution due to Camorra infiltration.
A total of ten politicians, if they wish, can participate in the June administrative elections, including: Antonio Cimmino, Annamaria De Simone, Sabrina Di Gennaro, Barbara Di Maio, Eutalia Esposito, Antonella Esposito, Francesco Iovino, Vincenza Maresca, Giovanni Nastelli, Catello Tito. Cimmino was recently appointed coordinator of Forza Italia's local authorities in Naples.
“Sentences must be respected and not commented on,” declared the former president of the municipal council of Castellammare di Stabia, D'Apice, “but in this case, which affects me on a personal level and causes me great pain, there is the possibility of appealing.
In addition to highlighting all the contradictions of a case that should have been personal, there is also regret for how it has become, in a completely instrumental way, an institutional and political issue, as well as a press fact, as inappropriate as it is difficult to forget, after a lifetime of exemplary and correct behavior".
