The Carabinieri Command for Health Protection, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, conducted a specific campaign of controls in the oil sector in the months of November and December.

This sector represents one of the main sectors of Italian agri-food production. During the campaign, oil mills, production facilities, and commercial businesses were inspected in a targeted nationwide operation, intensifying inspections compared to the standard regime for other periods of the year.

Overall, the Anti-Adaptation and Health Units (NAS) carried out 1.250 inspections involving supply chain operators, identifying irregular situations in 256 companies and commercial establishments.

26 people were reported to the Judicial Authorities, mainly for crimes of fraud in trade and sale of non-genuine food products. In addition, 202 entrepreneurs were fined for administrative violations, with a total amount of 189.000 euros.

The violations involved the lack of cleanliness and maintenance of the facilities, the failure to apply traceability and recording procedures for the oil produced, sometimes associated with the illegal state of the mills.

The campaign led to the suspension of 22 businesses and the seizure of over 46.000 liters of undeclared oil or oil declared to be of higher quality than the actual product. The primary objective of the campaign was to protect consumers and the entire olive oil production sector. Inspections will continue throughout 2024, given the economic importance of extra virgin olive oil as a national agri-food product of excellence.

Among the significant interventions:

Seizure of 230 liters of lampante oil labeled as extra virgin olive oil in an oil mill in the province of Mantua.
Report at liberty for fraud and forgery against the lawyers of an oil mill and a company in the province of Parma.
Penalty for possession of olives without information on their origin in an oil mill in the province of Viterbo.
Seizure of 1.500 kg of untraceable olive oil in an oil mill in the Viterbo area.
Seizure of 800 liters of oil products without traceability information at an oil mill in Messina.
Closure of an oil bottling plant in the province of Ragusa, with the seizure of 1.825 liters of extra virgin olive oil.
Seizure of 60 liters of extra virgin olive oil without adequate documentation to guarantee traceability in an oil mill/oil mill in the province of Naples, with sanctions for hygiene, health and structural deficiencies.
