The shortage of doctors in emergency rooms is a problem that affects the whole of Italy, but in Campania it takes on dramatic proportions.
This was confirmed by the President of the Region Vincenzo De Luca, who in his Facebook live on Friday announced the intention to announce a single regional competition to try to select the doctors needed to cover the needs of the emergency rooms.
De Luca explained that the Region has already called all the doctors who had participated in the competitions for other specializations, with the aim of employing them in the emergency rooms. The result, however, was merciless: only 15 of the eligible candidates showed up, and only two agreed to contract with the Ruggi hospital in Salerno.
“The competitions held by the individual ASLs have not led to any results”, said De Luca. “There are no doctors and this problem becomes unsolvable if the national government does not adjust the overall salaries for all medical and nursing staff and does not establish a bonus for those who work in the Emergency Room for the particular amount of fatigue and stress that this commitment entails”.
The decision to announce a single regional competition is an important step, but it is clear that it will not be enough to solve the problem of the shortage of doctors in emergency rooms. It is necessary for the Government to intervene to improve the working conditions and salaries of healthcare personnel, especially those working in emergency departments.
