January 10, 2024 marks the end of the protected gas market for non-vulnerable customers. Existing contracts under this regime will be automatically migrated to new “time-based” offers from the same operators.

What happens to customers who haven't chosen an offer?

Customers who have not selected a free market offer by January 10th will remain with the same operator with annual "Placet" offers at a variable rate. This type of supply involves certain conditions defined by ARERA, with a fixed component set by the vendors.

Customers who are 75 years of age or older;
Customers in disadvantaged economic conditions, which correspond to those who already receive the social bonus for electricity and gas;
Persons with disabilities pursuant to Article 3 of Law 104/92;
Those living in emergency housing following a natural disaster.

What should I do to choose the best deal?

Non-vulnerable customers who wish to choose a free market offer can do so at any time. To do so, they can use the ARERA portal, which allows them to compare the various solutions offered by operators based on their average consumption. The portal also offers a comparison with regulated market prices, to better understand the difference in costs.

The energy market

The end of the protected gas market is only the first step toward the complete liberalization of the energy market. For electricity, the transition to the free market is scheduled for July 2024.
