On stage on February 4th for the fourth event of the 2023/2024 theatre programme of the Teatro Aldo Giuffré in Battipaglia.
The play “The Two Popes”, the title of the show, was written by Anthony McCarten and, later adapted for the cinema, received an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay.
Those frenetic days that have written history forever. A Pope resigned and another to be elected, in the middle two men who, beyond their clothes, have their own experiences, a life to tell with very different words.
The show, the fourth in the 2023/2024 Giuffré theater program, arrived in Italy under the direction of Giancarlo Nicoletti and is the only production in the world authorized by McCarten.
Along with the great performance of Colangeli and Rigillo, the impressive scene created by Alessandro Chiti is also worthy of praise. The critical reception for “I due Papi” was astonishing, triumphing at the National Award “Franco Enriquez 2023” for Best Direction and the “Mulino Fenicio 2022” Award for Best Scenography.
THE SHOW
From the Oscar-winning author of Bohemian Rhapsody, Darkest Hour and The Theory of Everything comes the play that was adapted into a highly successful Netflix film. Ten years ago, Benedict XVI stunned the world with his resignation, the first in more than seven centuries. What prompted the most traditionalist of Popes to resign and hand over the chair of Peter to the radical and empathetic Argentine cardinal?
Starring two great actors of our scene, Giorgio Colangeli and Mariano Rigillo, “I due Papi” was hailed as “an amazing work” at its debut at the Borgio Verezzi Festival. Between historical document, humor and drama, the show retraces not only the frenetic days that led from Benedict’s resignation to Francis’ election, but also the “parallel lives” of two very different men, united by the same destiny. And, above all, it tells us about the birth of a friendship – special and unexpected – between two extraordinary personalities. At the center of it all, a timeless question: when you are in crisis, should you follow the rules or your own conscience?
