The so-called “Giorni della Merla” (Blackbird Days) are approaching, corresponding to the last days of January which, according to tradition, should be the coldest of the year.
However, the reality of global warming is giving the lie to this popular legend, which features black birds. They begin on January 29th and end on January 31st , and are said to be the coldest days of the year.
These are the days that, according to tradition, are supposed to be the coldest of the year and are often marked by frost and snow. Popular tradition tells several legends about why these days are called "Giorni della Merla" (Blackbird Days).
Some stories try to explain the origin of the gender difference in blackbirds, while others tell of originally white blackbirds that, due to the cold, turned black.
There is also a lesser-known legend that tells of two lovebirds , Merlo and Merla, who arranged their wedding at the end of January. Merlo's death while attempting to cross the frozen Po River caused Merla to cry, which is said to be heard on the three coldest days of the year, the Giorni della Merla.

Some weather forecasts indicate that tradition could be respected, with northern Italy and some areas of the south where temperatures below zero are expected during the night and early morning.
