Nexo Digital’s Great Art at the Cinema presents, for two days only, KLIMT’S THE KISS.
This is the first event of the 2024 season, a documentary film directed by Ali Ray that explores the history and mysteries of one of the most evocative paintings in the world.
Painted around 1908, THE KISS BY KLIMT is one of the artist's undisputed masterpieces. Gustav Klimt, the renowned titan of the Secession, is famous for fusing sensuality and ancient mythology with radical modernity.
His “golden period” is characterized by a unique working method that allowed him to apply natural gold leaf to the canvas, resulting in iconic works such as The Kiss. The film explores the details of Klimt's gold technique, while Asa Bennett's music enriches the viewing experience.
KLIMT'S THE KISS winds its way through fin-de-siècle Vienna, revealing the contradictions and extraordinary beauty of an era of social and cultural transformation.
Director Ali Ray explains: “This golden, glittering image of an embracing couple remains one of the most popular images of all time. Yet when a work like The Kiss becomes so familiar, we stop ‘seeing’ it. I wanted this film to remedy that problem. As one of the interviewees put it: ‘The Kiss could only have been painted when it was painted, in exactly that place and by exactly that artist.’”
Klimt's The Kiss is produced by Phil Grabsky with Exhibition on Screen and is part of the original and exclusive project by Nexo Digital, distributed exclusively in Italy with media partners Radio Capital, Sky Arte, MYmovies.it and in collaboration with Abbonamento Musei.
