In Stigliano, in the province of Matera, last night, approximately 1.500 pigs died due to a fire that broke out—for reasons still being investigated—in a shed used for breeding in the Arborteto district.
The firefighters, the Carabinieri, and a veterinarian from the Matera Health Authority responded to the scene—a metal structure measuring approximately 450 square meters.
The animal carcasses will be disposed of today. The farmer was also interviewed by the Carabinieri for summary information.
The man reported never having received any threats or extortion requests. The incident is believed to have been caused by a short circuit or malfunction of one of the heaters used to heat the rooms.
