Atrani, one of the jewels of the Amalfi Coast and the smallest municipality in Italy with fewer than 800 inhabitants, faces a significant challenge: the digital divide, the difficulty of accessing the internet for work, education, commerce, recreation, and production.

The municipal administration has written to the Prefect of Salerno, requesting an urgent meeting to accelerate the digitalization process at the start of the new year. The goal is to address the numerous telecommunications issues Atrani is experiencing.

The near-absence of telephone and internet connectivity risks negatively impacting both social inclusion and the country's competitiveness. This is particularly evident due to the network coverage gaps that slow productivity, limit the exercise of citizenship rights, and hinder the development of digital skills, which are essential in today's world of work.

The Municipality of Atrani emphasizes that the fiber optic cabling process, begun months ago to ensure access to advanced internet services, has reached the final testing phase by Infratel, the company of the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy that manages the Ultra Broadband Plan (BUL).

Once this step is completed, it will be possible to put the internet service on sale through companies in agreement with Open Fiber, bringing the digital connection of the village to the level of large cities.

The Municipality believes this structural change will significantly improve the lives of citizens, the efficiency of public offices, and coordination in the event of hydrogeological emergencies, given the shortcomings in mobile phone coverage and internet access.

These issues can no longer be dismissed as secondary, given the importance of digital connections in everyday life, both at work and for tourism, and the attraction of visitors from around the world. It is hoped that 2024 will mark a positive turning point in this area.
