In 2023, 16.307 earthquakes were recorded in Italy, an average of 44 per day. This is according to data from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
The strongest magnitude was 5.2 Mw, recorded off the coast of Calabria on May 1. The region with the most tremors of magnitude greater than 2.0 was Sicily, with 181 events.
"It is essential to raise awareness of seismic hazards and the importance of understanding our nation's geological structure in order to better protect ourselves from seismic risk.", declared the president of the INGV, Carlo Doglioni.
I earthquakes occurred at a similar rate to that of 2022, confirming the decreasing trend compared to the years 2016, 2017 and 2018, characterized by the seismic sequence in central Italy.
Some 16.307 earthquakes recorded In 2023, only 2.018 were of magnitude 2.0 or greater, 233 had a magnitude between 3.0 and 3.9, and 26 had a magnitude between 4.0 and 4.9.

There were two events with a magnitude greater than or equal to 5.0: the one on May 1st which occurred in Tyrrhenian Sea, off the coast of Calabria, of magnitude 5.2; the other occurred on February 16 near the northern coast of Croatia, of magnitude 5.1.
The most active region, considering only earthquakes of magnitude equal to or greater than 2.0, was Sicily with 181 events while Sardinia was confirmed as the least seismic region.
Also in 2023, numerous seismic sequences of varying lengths were recorded, some of which were active in previous years, such as that of Amatrice-Visso-Norcia in central Italy, which began in August 2016, with around 5 thousand earthquakes; then there is the sequence in theTuscan-Romagna Apennines, with approximately 800 earthquakes, that of umbertide (Umbria), and that of the Campi Flegrei (Campania) with approximately 450 earthquakes considering only events with magnitude greater than or equal to 1.0.
Italy is a country with high seismicity
Data from 2023 confirms that Italy is a highly seismic country. It's important to be aware of this risk and take all necessary measures to protect yourself.
