Luigi Santini: "After so much talk...now we wait for the facts"

Lots of words, few facts. The Prime Minister's press conference is a not very reassuring example for the country. The opposite of what one might expect. The event did not see moments of conflict, but rather, a discouraging page in the political debate. The Prime Minister was very good at dodging direct or unpleasant questions, limiting herself to vague answers, or trying to lay the cause of the problems on previous governments.

Governing is difficult. Even more so in a mature democracy. In them the principle holds that any majority, legitimately elected, is legitimated to apply its political program. But governing does not mean commanding. Governing implies dialogue, confrontation, even the occasional yielding to the intentions of the majority.

On this issue, it is very worrying that – with respect to Mattarella's call for the renewal of beach concessions – Giorgia Meloni has resolved the problem, stating "we will take it into account". An example of clear Institutional grammatical errors, if not of little respect towards the Head of State.

Politically, Meloni is certainly good, but what is leaking from all sides is the government team as a whole. There is no longer any doubt that the executive has an average low caliber. With a few exceptions, the ministers, undersecretaries and vice ministers are proving to be dangerously incompetent.

To a question from a reporter, Giorgia Meloni replied that she would like to know who, in this country, “calls the shots”. A statement which she followed with a peremptory sentence: “I will not be blackmailed”. A laudable perspective that the Prime Minister had to deal with. In the Government's action, political leaders (starting with the Prime Minister) are subjected to pressure from those who are indicated as strong powers. For every choice that the Government and Parliament have to make, the shields of this or that clique are raised.

It is hard to believe that Giorgia Meloni, who has been involved in politics for more than thirty years, is surprised to have been, even personally, the object of attention from interest groups. She firmly states that she has not given in under any circumstances. In truth, to demonstrate the contrary, it would be enough to cite the cases of excessive profits in banks, in the energy sector, in
arms trade, to conclude that even his government has given in, in some
cases, under pressure from interest groups.

The press conference confirmed Giorgia Meloni's obvious allergy to an effective confrontation. There are issues that the Prime Minister is having a hard time dealing with. For example, Giorgia Meloni mentioned the appointment of Giuliano Amato as coordinator of a government study commission on cyber security, stressing that she did not want it. Amato immediately declared that he was ready to step aside. This case demonstrates the Government's tendency to exclude unwelcome people and subjects, because they are not aligned with the majority's directions.

This is a worrying signal, both on a political level and in terms of quality.
of the governing class. Especially in times of crisis, it would be necessary, in order to govern,
to welcome the best forces and individuals present in the country. This applies to both politicians
that for those who work in institutions. As President De Mita said, the
Politics gives the directions, everything else is administration, that is, application.
