The Documentary Ribbon of the Year goes to Mario Martone, the author who, with curiosity and passion, penned the affectionately unpublished story "There Somebody Loves Me," dedicated to Massimo Troisi, in 2023, as well as the originality of "A Portrait in Motion. A Tribute to Mimmo Jodice," which reveals the art and philosophy of a great photographer.

The announcement was made by the Board of Directors of Italian Film Journalists, who will present the director with this recognition of excellence during the awards ceremony to be held in the coming weeks in Rome. The awards will include Ribbons and special prizes for the winners, chosen from the 55 titles in the official selection announced today, including 'Cinema del Reale' (Cinema of the Real), films on 'Cinema, Entertainment, Culture', and this year also a special 'five' dedicated to Art.

"Presented respectively at the Berlinale and the Turin Film Festival, they are two films that leave a special mark in the memory of cinema and in the story of different characters, yet linked by a thread that, beyond Naples - we read in the motivation of the Award - intertwines the affectionate reinterpretation of a great, much-loved and never-forgotten protagonist with the aesthetics of an artist, a 'giant' as Martone defines him, who brings into focus in every shot a sort of 'philosophical' manual of living, allowing us to enjoy a beauty that goes beyond the gaze.

The Ribbon of the Year is an award that in documentaries, as among the best cinema titles, rewards the excellence and particular quality of a "special" film.

"This year, a Silver Ribbon has already been announced for the cinema to Paola Cortellesi for the exploit of an extraordinary film like There's Still Tomorrow - recalls the President, Laura Delli Colli, on behalf of the Board of Directors - and went for documentaries in 2022 to Giuseppe Tornatore for Ennio on the great Morricone, and in 2023 to Francesco Zippel's film on Sergio Leone, the Italian who invented America".

The two documentaries for which Mario Martone received the Nastro dell'Anno are part of this year's selection of 55 contenders, chosen from the 130 titles submitted in 2023 by major festivals or specialized events, and also presented on networks or television platforms. The selection offers a rich array of themes, stories, and personalities that embraces both current events and recent history, with a particular focus on the present in real-life cinema during a dramatic year of migration, war, femicide, and climate change concerns. In the world of entertainment and culture, the selection pays special attention, along with cinema, to the protagonists of music.

The official selection, on the coordination of the 130 published titles, edited by Maurizio di Rienzo, is signed by the National Board of Italian Film Journalists (SNGCI): Laura Delli Colli (President), Fulvia Caprara (Vice President), Oscar Cosulich, Maurizio di Rienzo, Susanna Rotunno, Paolo Sommaruga and Stefania Ulivi.
