Bruno Segre, lawyer and partisan, died Saturday morning in his home in Turin at the age of 105.
The news was confirmed by his nephew, Ruben Segre, who described Bruno's death as peaceful and in his sleep, with the family present on Holocaust Remembrance Day. Bruno Segre has been described as a left-wing intellectual and a militant anti-fascist and secular activist.
During the occupation he was arrested and at the Liberation he joined the partisan formations of Giustizia e Libertà in Val Grana, contributing to the liberation of Caraglio in the Cuneo area.
After the Liberation, Segre worked as a reporter and later practiced as a lawyer. He defended numerous young conscientious objectors and founded the newspaper “L'incontro”, dedicated to the defense of civil rights, against racism, anti-Semitism, disarmament and world peace.
He was a member of the Independent Socialist Union and the Italian Socialist Party, where he was a city councilor of Turin and acting mayor of the San Paolo Banking Institute of Turin.
The passing of Bruno Segre has prompted numerous messages of condolence. The President of the Piedmont Region, Alberto Cirio, and the Mayor of Turin, Stefano Lo Russo, both expressed their regret and praised Segre's long and influential career in the fields of democracy, anti-fascism and freedom.
Both declared that his passing is a warning to everyone to defend these values and pass them on to future generations.
