Born on November 7, 1944 in Leggiuno, province of Varese, Riva is one of the greatest strikers in the history of Italian football. He played most of his career with Cagliari, from 1963 to 1976, becoming top scorer in Serie A for three consecutive seasons (1969-1970, 1970-1971, 1972-1973).
The 1969-1970 season was particularly memorable, as Cagliari, led by Riva, won its first and so far only Italian championship title. At international level, Gigi Riva represented Italy in many competitions, including the 1968 European Championship, where he contributed to Italy's victory.
